The opening of the kiln is always exciting. The anticipation of glaze tests, at times, is more exciting than the actual pieces. Sometimes not, but always valuable information.

The Geil downdraft gas kiln is loaded and fired, on average, twice a month. Almost every firing is unique due to the size of the pieces, different glazes and stacking of the kiln. We pride ourselves on consistent firings, matching the top and bottom cones. After initial candling, each firing is recorded every hour, allowing for a comparison with the last or a comparably stacked load. In this way, length of time and temperature is readily seen and adjustments can be made accordingly.

Future plans include a salt fired kiln and another downdraft kiln for large sculptural pieces
